First roof gardens were built in the Near East e.g. the hanging gardens of Semiramis (2nd.wonder of the world).

The Romans built even fish ponds on roofs.

as from 800
In Scandinavia and Island grass roofs were used for thermal insulation.

as from 1400
During the Renaissance roof gardens are getting popular again.

as from 1900
In Berlin the so called "Berliner Dach", a construction of timber and cement, is covered with gravel and clay. Due to flight of seeds wild meadows began to grow.

as from 1920
In conjunction with the flat roofs of the Bauhaus style, green roofs spread out again.

as from 1980
The ecological value of green roofs gets more and more important; the first extensive green roofs occur.

as from 1982
The Forschungsgesellschaft Landschaftsentwicklung Landschaftsbau e. V. (FLL) publishes guidelines for the planning, execution and upkeep of green roof sites.

since 2003
The Fachvereinigung Bauwerksbegrünung e. V. (FBB) arranges an annual symposium. At this symposium the latest trends and developments of green roofs are presented.

March 2008
The Forschungsgesellschaft Landschaftsentwicklung Landschaftsbau e. V. (FLL) published the latest guidelines for the planning, execution and upkeep of green roof sites.
